College for Kids grew out of another summer program called Reaching Higher. Reaching Higher was started in 2010 out of a desire to help students reach their appropriate reading level. 10 students would meet one-on-one with volunteers for two hours Monday-Friday to work on increasing fluency and vocabulary.
Over time, Hope for Augusta staff desired to provide a richer and more instructive experience for students that would enable them to flourish academically, spiritually, and emotionally. Out of this desire, College for Kids was born in 2014!
College for Kids is a four-week educational summer day camp that serves approximately 75 preK-8th grade Hope for Augusta students. Students eat breakfast together and then receive instruction in Math, English Language Arts, and Bible from certified teachers in the morning. After eating a good lunch, students then participate in various arts, sports, and life skills activities such as Photography, Basketball, and Cooking.
After the last week of camp, students attend Camp Grace, an overnight camp located outside of Macon, GA designed specifically for students who live in an urban environment. At Camp Grace, students learn from God’s Word as well as participate in fun activities such as rock climbing, fishing, and archery.
It is our desire that, through College for Kids and Camp Grace, students would know Christ and experience an environment of learning, fun, and love as they flourish spiritually, academically, physically, and emotionally.
